Have you ever wondered why many Hong Kong police officers in early films spoke with a Shandong accent? In 1922, as Hong Kong's population surged, the government expanded the police force, recruiting a substantial number of tall, diligent individuals from Weihai, Shandong. By 1924, Weihai natives made up one-fifth of Hong Kong's entire police force. This marked the beginning of a profound, long-lasting connection between Shandong and Hong Kong, one that runs as deep as the Pearl River itself.

Fast forward to the present day, Shandong continues to embrace opportunities and proactively involvesin the national strategy for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. By leveraging its abundant resources and products, Shandong fosters deeper integration with Hong Kong and Macao.

The Greater Bay Area's “Vegetable Basket“ Lands in Resource-Rich Shandong

In 2019, Shandong and Guangdong signed the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area 'Vegetable Basket' Cooperation Framework Agreement.“ As of 2023, 248 vegetable production bases and enterprises for the Greater Bay Area have been certified, and two distribution centers have been established in Shouguang and Shenxian.

Economic and Trade Partners: Achieving Complementary Advantages

Hong Kong remains Shandong's largest source of foreign investment and its most significant economic and trade partner. Simultaneously, Hong Kong serves as the primary choice for Shandong enterprises seeking to embrace the international capital market and build a platform for globalization.

A recent survey revealed that Confucius, a symbol of Shandong's cultural heritage, ranks first among Hong Kong people's impressions of the province. As the birthplace of Confucianism, Shandong holds a special place in the hearts of Hong Kong and Macaocitizens. Building upon this foundation, the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Shandong Doctoral Alumni Association, numerous Shandong-Hong Kong-Macao Young Entrepreneurs Summits, and initiatives like the Mainland Internship Program for Hong Kong university students hosted by Shandong have fostered meaningful interactions among young talents from these regions.

The 2024 Hong Kong-Macao-Shandong Week, held in late May, serves as another prime example of collaboration, offering a platform to share opportunities and drive growth. From the Yellow River to the Pearl River, the bond between Shandong, Hong Kong, and Macao flows with passion and sincerity, creating an ever-expanding space for cooperation.
